By Linda Kelly, MSW, RSW I remember one of my colleagues giving me a hard time in the past for focusing so much on the look of our offices.
“No one even notices!” “It’s not as important as the work we do.” “You’re the only one who cares about this stuff.” While well-meaning, I had to say that I disagree (and we still disagree, to this day). Walking into KMH is a beautiful experience; from the tall ceilings, to the handpicked paintings on the walls, to the antique coffee bar, all the way to the candle-holders, books, and soft lighting that give each office a unique feel. We serve clients who come to us at a time of vulnerability. Some have been exposed to repeated traumatic experiences throughout their lives. Others have suffered from loss after loss to the point that they can no longer look towards the future with any sort of hope. Yet, they prove themselves time and time again to be strong, resilient, and unbelievably brave. It is for them that I care about how this place looks. It is for them that we work tirelessly to provide a safe, comfortable, beautiful space in which they can reconnect with themselves, and rekindle their hopes for the future. It does matter. |
