01
What it is
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a specialized psychotherapy protocol. Your therapist helps you process distressing thoughts and memories using bilateral stimulation: left-right eye movements, buzzing hand-held sensors, or tones.
The bilateral stimulation helps the mind connect emotion with logic, and the pace of the sets lets you move through memories quickly. Many people notice significant improvements in overall functioning.
02
What a session is like
EMDR is not jumping straight into the worst memory. The early sessions are about history, goals, and making sure you have the grounding skills to stay steady when things feel intense.
When you begin processing, you hold part of a memory in mind for short sets while the stimulation runs, then pause and notice what comes up. You stay in control the whole time, and you can stop whenever you need to.
EMDR is one of the most effective treatments for trauma. The speed of the movement lets you process memories at a rapid pace.
03
What it can help with
EMDR is most commonly used to treat trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. It can also be an effective intervention for many other issues where a painful experience keeps echoing into the present.
04
Is it right for me?
If you understand why something affects you but knowing has not made it stop, EMDR is worth asking about. Your clinician will talk through whether it fits your goals, and what preparation would come first.
