Values as an internal compass

Values do not tell you where to go. They help show you how to travel.

3 min read · The KMH clinical team

In a world that is constantly telling us to be more, it is easy to feel lost. When life feels hectic, or when you find yourself at a crossroads, your values are what help keep you grounded.

Values act as an internal compass, guiding you in the direction that will leave you feeling most fulfilled. They do not tell you where to go. They help show you how to travel.

Values are not goals

Mistakes do not mean you are lost. They are an opportunity to change course.

Goals are things we check off, and once they are done, they are done: buying a home, reaching an income, arriving at a vacation spot, adopting a third dog. Values are ways of being. You do not finish being honest or complete being curious. You choose to show up that way, every day.

Whether it is authenticity, adventure or deep connection, these are not chores. Living a values-driven life is not about perfection. It is about intention. If you value kindness but find yourself having a meltdown, your value is what helps you apologize and get back on track.

Your true north

Feelings of anxiousness, stress, guilt, shame, and internal or external conflict often come from a sense that our values have been violated. By naming the value that is being challenged, you can re-route, address the issue, and keep going.

  • Identify what is most important to you.
  • Make decisions based on what aligns best with your values.
  • Practise upholding your own values every chance you get.
  • When conflict arises, ask yourself: which of my values has been violated?

Pause. Realign. Move forward.
